Kelly Jordan
Pledge Class: Eta
Major: Accounting (BS/MPA)
Graduation Year: 2018
Company (Current) & Position: Senior Auditor at Miller Cooper

Brief description of the duties in your role at your company:

As a senior auditor, I am responsible for running an engagement from start to finish. This includes communication with the client, training a staff, and keeping the job moving. I work on primarily financial statement and employee benefit audits for privately held companies. As I work at a mid-size accounting firm, I not only work with managers, but partners of the firm as well.

Favorite AKPsi Memory:

That would have to be going to Steak N’ Shake with a group of brothers at 2am after spending all night studying accounting at the COB. We were so tired, but having the time of our life. These brothers have become my life-long friends and seven of them will stand in my wedding this December.

How has your experience with professionalism through AKPsi helped you after college and into your career?

I gained my professional confidence through AKPsi. The older brothers were great examples of professionals and for me the easiest way to learn, is to see. By lead, they showed me how to interact at career fairs, with professional speakers, and during interviews. They also had a great influence on me to go for roles/internships I wasn’t sure I qualified for. I had numerous internships during college, and I wouldn’t have even tired until junior year if a brother hadn’t pushed me to do so.

As rush chair, spring of 2019, we presented to the students at a IBFC night, and afterwards 90% of the rushee’s came up to our table. Super proud moment and felt all the hard work that we put in paid off, aka sigma’s are great :)

How has your experience with professionalism through AKPsi helped you after college and into your career?

I feel confident in my ability to interact with my colleagues even though I am brand new due to many of the skills I gained in AKPsi. A big part of it was knowing professional email eitique through AKPsi - this is huge when you start virtually like I did. The other thing I did to build my confidence/comfortability in this role, I reached out to all 20ish people on my team and did 1:1 coffee chats (basically interviews) and got really good feedback as well as advice/insight into the position. I would recommend this if you start virtual or in person. Overall, the soft skills you gain from holding leadership positions in AKPSi are super beneficial, you learn a lot of the technical skills on the job.

How has your experience with professionalism through AKPsi helped you after college and into your career?

I'm so grateful to have found AKPsi. Bridging the gap between college and "the real world" can be so incredibly hard, and there's truly no better way to prepare yourself than by getting involved in AKPsi. It forced you to think big picture about what's next, pushed you to be hungry in obtaining internships like your peers, provided networking opportunities and interview practice, and generally improved your confidence in being able to interact with members of the business world. I don't think I would have known where to start in regards to career fairs, interviews, internships, etc - unless it was for AKPsi and for being surrounded by brothers pushing themselves to be the best. I would not have had the career that I had if not for AKPsi, as working with the Packback team from the start helped to launch my career in Recruiting, before I even knew what it truly was. Those skills and opportunities are invaluable, but the friendships meant even more.

Major/Minor: Human Resources Management and Organizational Leadership Double Major, Business Environment & Sustainability Minor
Graduation Year: 2014
Company (Current) & Position: Senior HRIS Analyst at McDermott Will & Emery

Brief description of the duties in your role at your company:

As an analyst on our HR Operations team, I maintain our various Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS). HRIS is essentially the middle ground between HR and IT. I’m responsible for system configuration, data integrity and security, and a lot of reporting and analytics. My goal is to continuously improve our processes and enhance our systems within HR. I also supervise our HR Services function, which includes two assistants who are responsible for running various administrative HR processes and data entry in our HRIS.

 Favorite AKPsi Memory:

My favorite memory is probably the first AKPsi formal I attended in the spring of 2012. My pledge class had become really close by this time, and a group of us squeezed into a hotel room together (college kids on a budget). Many good memories were made that night!

How has your experience with professionalism through AKPsi helped you after college and into your career?

AKPsi taught me how to network. Going through the rush and pledging process really forces you to step outside of your comfort zone in order to get to know the chapter. The entire process provided countless opportunities to practice interviewing and networking through all of the various professional events and helped me perfect my elevator speech in no time. All of the practice throughout college, thanks to AKPsi, made networking out in the “real world” seem much less daunting.

How has your experience with professionalism through AKPsi helped you after college and into your career?

Something that continuously proves itself to be ever-important is relationships. Establish trust with those around you by being reliable, friendly/collaborative, and delivering positive results. Leaving this impression on someone, especially people in authority, will influence them to go to bat for you and to bring you interesting opportunities. Don’t be a people-pleaser, but be someone that others like and trust.

Don’t be too defensive. Sometimes you’re the problem. Be open to critical feedback.
Learn to negotiate - I recommend reading “Never Split the Difference.” This was recommended to me by Kasey Gandham and has influenced all of my progressional interactions. Probably the most interesting and useful book I’ve ever read.
Consider multiple occupations/income streams that align with your passions. 10 years ago, I never would have imagined I could play to sold-out clubs in a band and be a social media influencer all on top of my 9-5 career. But it’s possible and very rewarding.
Don’t fall prey to imposter syndrome. Feel like you’re faking it? So is everyone else!
