On Saturday October 19th 2013, several members of the Xi Psi chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi woke up early to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity in Bloomington, Illinois. While there, they worked on putting up installation, created shelves in the shed for better storage, trimmed pieces of blue board insulation. In the four quick hours they were there, they were able to finish nailing up half of the isolation on the house, finish one side of the base layer of the roof, and use the shelf built to clean up and organize tools at the end of their shift. While working with a few other volunteers on sight, the members were also able to meet and work side by side with the future homeowner of the house. The volunteer project directors on site were David Bollivar (from IWU), Hank Campbell (from ISU), Gary Klass (from ISU), Franz Eckrich. During our break we got to talk and socialize with all the volunteers and learn about Jose’s family and all the other homes Habitat for Humanity has helped over the years. Lots of pictures were taken that morning to capture all of our memories. Everyone hard at work.

What is Habitat for Humanity?

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps build houses that are affordable to low-income families around the world. Donations to Habitat for Humanity provide vital financial support to help them build and repair houses. In addition, more than 1 million people each year volunteer to assist in building with them under trained supervision.

What is the best part of volunteering at Habitat?

The best part of volunteering at Habitat was being able to work with the homeowner, Jose, and being able to talk to him and work alongside with him. It was great getting to work side by side with brothers. No task done that day was one that could have been accomplished alone. We all worked together and needed one another. It was a complete group effort and coming together to help Jose build his house for his family was such a rewarding experience. After this event we all agreed we would go back and volunteer to help again in any way possible, whether that be with one another or as individuals.

Brothers in attendance: Kody Barnes, Kim Boehm, Lindsay Brightwell, Eric Chan, Eileen Corley, Krsitin Ivan, Katelyn Kerkstra, Joe Laskey, Taylor Wendt, and Jimmy Wingfield
